I recently went out to see "Watchmen" with my sister and a couple friends. And I'm not really sure how I feel about it. The movie was very true to the comic in some ways and yet still felt like something that could almost be considered separate. It to me did not truly feel like the comic in movie form. It felt more like...more like a persons take on the comic. Like the directors went into the movie with their own idea of what Watchmen the comic was and what Watchmen the movie should be. When I read the comic I felt...Almost like I was reading something...holy. I don't really know how best to describe the way the comic made me feel. The best I can put this is that Watchmen changed things for me. The heroes [I use this term loosely] weren't the stereotypical superheros trying to prove to a dysfunctional world that evil could be stopped. They weren't a team of "super friends" fighting some greater evil in the name of good. Frankly they weren't even super. They weren't any of the things so many of today's traditional comic book heroes are. They simply were...human. Despite all the things they did and would do you could still care about them. Christ you could even associate yourself with the villain. Watchmen was not a land of black and white. To me it was like a sea made from shades of grey. No one character was spotless. They were all good and evil. The movie changed that. It took the ideas and feelings of the comic and tried to combine them with the themes of R-Movies. In the end you are left with something that resembles the comic but has been buried under a pile of unnecessary violence and nudity. Combined with the poor music choices I don't think that the movie was truly Watchmen...
That said I don't think the movie was bad. It was a very good movie. The actors fitted their roles well and came off as being believable which was a plus. It's just...I never forgot that it was a movie. I liked the movie but I don't think I will ever love it the same way I did the comic. I think that Watchmen is what you make of it. It's a Rorschach test for the soul.
